I wish I was in one of those T-38 photob support planes though. I can only hope they had some video cameras running out of them as well.

We had a storm today. The office got all excited and ran to the windows to watch the clouds. Apparently there aren’t very many midwesterners here. I haven’t experienced a real storm in New York. Perhaps I need to shift my definition of storm. I do miss the bowl you over winds, looming super cells, lightning and tornadoes of Missouri, but the city makes up for it. Even rather mundane clouds look good over it.

I helped out Vox Magazine in June by shooting and producing a short video piece on a Zipline for my buds Brian Kratzer, d.o.p. and Andrew Williams, Vox Photo Coordinator. Andrew helped out shooting stills for the issue and secondary video for the project. Unfortunately something was wrong with his 5d and the focus shifted constantly during the video in rapid minuscule amounts. We had a great time and I got to ride a zipline and wear a gopro, then sweat myself to death running through densely vegetated Missouri hills and ravines shooting from the ground.

Check it out!

Allison Pasek asked to borrow my gopro for a story she is doing about Steve Diekmann a Boone county resident who races on the weekends. I asked if I could come and operate the gopro and use a mounting system I and another friend had put together that connects it to a clamp perfect for a roll cage.

I shot a ton of other footage as well and had a great time. So watch the video.. and make sure you see the wreck at the end filmed from inside a car!

Covered the first annual Battle of Boonville reenactment with a team put together by Clay Stalter for his masters project on the Civil War in Missouri.

Primarily I was shooting a video piece on a reenactor who portrays a woman traveling with the military camp to follow her husband and covering the actual battle reenactment with video, but I got to shoot stills for myself. It was a great weekend though after 4 days constantly shooting video and stills and carrying all that gear in the blazing sun I am burned and sore.

The State Guard retreats from the Lyon’s federal forces that won the day. The battle is referred to as the Boonville Races because of how short it was and how quickly the guard retreated.

I heard conflicting numbers on how many horses showed up anywhere from 50-80 were present at the reenactment though at the actual battle there wasn’t cavalry. Artillery groups brought 24 cannons when there were only 2 in the historical battle. To get use out of all the horses and guns there was a “general civil war battle” reenactment that occurred just after the historical one.

Clay Stalter and I went out to the Battle of Boonville media night to start finding subjects to cover for the Battle of Boonville reenactment …

Clay Stalter and I went out to the Battle of Boonville media night to start finding subjects to cover for the Battle of Boonville reenactment occurring this weekend. I think I found a good story subject. Collin’s Battery B then demonstrated their two cannons in a night fire. I shot at 36mm (full frame) 24 2.8 on a d300s right beside the canon. That was probably a stupid idea but it looks cool. I turned off my sound in some effort to protect the microphone and covered my ears. August Kryger for the Columbia Tribune standing beside me couldn’t cover his ears and shoot stills at the same time. After seeing him writhing in pain after the first 1.5lb charge went off a few feet away from us I set up my video shot and shot some stills from a 10-15 feet farther back at 105-300. That didn’t really help. I felt a bit deafened and my ears hurt all night, but at least unlike August I wasn’t wondering if I was actually bleeding. Nobody dared even get that close though. August, Clay and I got all the best shots and might have ruined it for the more timid med. That’s the price of not being as aggressive I guess.

Credit goes to Clay for the behind angle and the audio. We were worried the autogain on the 7d would mess it up but it held its own! GJ 7d!
I’m going to get some nicer ear plugs for the 24 cannon firing and with the public there I’m sure I won’t be able to get beside them. I’m thinking of shooting 600mm down the line of barrels.

Clay is creating a huge multimedia project about the civil war and how it pertains to missouri out of all these stories and material gathered by teams he assembles for civil war events. I’ve been working with him a little over a month now going to a few events throughout Missouri and Kansas and will be at Wilson’s creek in August.

p.s. They will be firing 24.. 24 cannons on Saturday night. I suggest you be there with ear protection.
